Abstract [en]
How does the dictionary Medieval personal names of Sweden treat material from Jämtland, Härjedalen and Bohuslän?
Sveriges medeltida personnamn (SMP) is the name of a dictionary of personal names from medieval sources from Sweden, based on large collections in Uppsala. The part of the dictionary covering first names is in course of publication. The aim of this paper is to give some glimpses of the way the dictionary has treated material from the border provinces of Bohuslän, Härjedalen and Jämt-land, which up until the 17th century belonged to Norway.
In the main the dictionary treats material from these provinces in the same way as material from medieval Sweden. The author finds this questionable.
Some attention is devoted to the question whether the personal names system of these provinces should be regarded as Swedish or Norwegian. The preliminary conclusion is that the province of Bohuslän should be regarded as Norwegian in this regard, while the provinces of Jämtland and Härjedalen could possibly be placed in a position between Norwegian and Swedish.
