The Dialect and Folklore Archive in Uppsala, established in 1914, is a part of aSwedish government agency for systematic research into Swedish dialects andfolk traditions. Its tasks include the collection of living material in the field,storing these collections and editing the material for research purposes. Thegeographical area covered by the Uppsala archive includes the greater part ofSweden and since the 1920s also the Swedish speaking areas in Estonia. TomasGärdström was one of the folklore collectors who worked with the archive inSweden. He collected 110 folklife accounts and thousands of dialect words.This chapter is based on his material, and is the first text that looks more closelyon his accounts of folk belief among the Swedish-speaking areas of Estonia, anarea of folklife that has been largely neglected among scholars.
