Abstract [en]

The present study investigates the extent to which neologisms from the yearly lists published by the Language Council of Sweden, and its predecessors, later occur in contemporary dictionaries published by the Swedish Academy. The results show that among the 1,504 words published in the neologisms lists from 1986 to 2020, 46% have later occurred in an edition of Svensk ordbok or Svenska Akademiens ordlista. These results are discussed in terms of their ability to indicate whether the words in the yearly neologisms lists have come to stay in the Swedish language, which is a recurrent question from the public when the yearly list of new words is presented.
