In Scandinavian languages there are many popular bird names, most of which have been recorded in the dialect archives in the Nordic countries. The thesis concentrates on the bird names for snipes, i.e. the common snipe, the great snipe, the jacksnipe and the woodcook, in all approx. 330 different names. Some of these are recognized throughout Scandinavia, while others are only sparsely confirmed in single dialects.

An especially large number of names refer to the common snipe, mainly due to its typical vibrating sound. Since the sound resembles a certain unobtrusive whinny from a horse or bleat from a goat or a sheep, many of the names contain words associating to these animals. Names describing a creaking sound mostly refer to the woodcock. Fairly common are names describing the protruding beak, a characteristic feature of all snipes.

In order to give a complete semantic and etymological picture, all words forming part of the names have been identified and sorted by category, i.e. words indicating a common implicit meaning. The categories in turn have been divided into two main groups: words describing different sounds, and words describing visual impressions. In addition, names describing popular beliefs and those transferred from other bird species are presented.

Factors that influence origin, formation, existence and development of bird names have been considered. With the etymological discussion forming the necessary background, ethnological aswell as cultural influences complete the picture of the naming process. Man's need for identification and classification of phenomena in his environment as well as the presence vs. lack of affect are important factors in the process. As is shown, a striking sound along with a particular appearence has inspired many affected popular names, while scientific names largely refer to visual, non-affected impressions.

Due to man's present lack of everyday connection with nature many of the popular bird names presented are no longer in use. However, some of the names prove to be fairly young, which shows that the process of popular classification and naming is still a functioning part of our language and culture.

Tilltal (Tillgängligt kulturarv för forskning i tal, ‘Accessible cultural heritage for speech research’) is a multidisciplinary and methodological project undertaken by the Institute of Language and Folklore, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and The Swedish National Archives in cooperation with the National Language Bank and SWE-CLARIN [1]. It aims to provide researchers better access to archival audio recordings using methods from language technology. The project comprises three case studies and one activity and usage study. In the case studies, actual research agendas from three different fields (ethnology, sociolinguistics, and interaction analysis) serve as a basis for identifying procedures that may be simplified with the aid of digital tools. In the activity and usage study, we are applying an activity-theoretical approach with the aim of involving researchers and investigating how they use – and would like to be able to use – the archival resources at ISOF. Involving researchers in participatory design ensures that digital solutions are suggested and evaluated in relation to the requirements expressed by researchers engaged in specific research tasks[2].In this paper, we focus on one of the case studies, which investigates the process by which personal experience narratives are transformed into cultural heritage [3], and account for our results in exploring how different types of text material from the archives can be used to find relevant sections of the audio recordings. Finally, we discuss what lessons can be learned, and what conclusions can be drawn, from our experiences of interdisciplinary collaboration in the project.

This study follows and describes the various ways in which the adjective grann is used in Swedish dialects. These dialects are variations of the spoken language which have developed over centuries in different parts of the country. The author believes that a study of usages and meanings of words in the dialects can contribute to the understanding of changes of meaning. Since no word-semantic study based on Swedish dialect material of this kind and scope has been made before (although there are many fine studies of semantic fields), the focus is directed toward the material and the limitations it poses on methods of analysis. A concept of semantic main word (HOsem) is introduced. Dialect-geographical methods are used to find and explain connections between usages and meanings. In this way one can, for example, show that the use of the expression grant om together with a personal subject in a part of Northern Sweden in meanings ranging from 'careful (of)' to 'fond (of)' has been developed locally, whereas the use of the adverb grant in the meaning 'clearly, sharply' with certain verbs is a loan from Denmark. The author also takes a stand in the discussion of the etymology of grann. The context in which the word grann appears is examined and collocations, idioms, proverbs, riddles, etc., in which it appears have been studied. Semantic relations such as synonyms, antonyms and homonyms are also discussed, along with the question of homonymy versus polysemy. For example, the words smal, tunn, klen, fin are very rarely synonyms, but have either the function of describing a different dimension than grann (which refers to the small dimension of a long, more-or less cylindrical object), or are equivalents, that is, they have the same meaning but have different geographical locations.

The Swedish village by-laws are a collection of rules for coexistence in a village which evolved during the 18th and 19th centuries. The dissertation takes its starting point in an edition of Byordningar från Mälarlänen (Village By-Laws in the Lake Mälar districts) containing about 400 by-laws from the central part of Sweden, and is a limited review of that edition at the same time as it gives a systematic survey of certain aspects specified in the by-laws. These aspects were added as the result of an official proposal in 1742 containing a model on how a by-law should be constructed. The question is asked whether the directives of the Government were formulated when they reached the local level, or whether they were redesigned and adapted to suit the local situation. The village by-laws in the Mälar counties differ in form and in content depending upon the official proposal on by-laws from 1742. The village by-laws were originally discussed in connection with the changes in agriculture, and thus concerned such sectors as farming methods, fencing, grazing, the right to certain proportions of the village's resources. The local conditions in the village are reflected in, for example, the rules on the length of the grass for grazing. There were different kinds of such by-laws, e.g., by-laws for individual villages and by-laws for parishes (approved at a parish meeting). The initiative of the Government in requiring village by-laws gave different results in different counties. Large parts of Uppsala county are without forest land. The fences and the system of enclosing fields are therefore of particular interest in a discussion on the village by-laws. I have demonstrated that their origin and acceptance in Swedish villages and parishes can be placed in political, chronological, social and functional contexts.

The Germanic initial sound combination wr (e.g. in *wrītan 'write') has not been preserved in any standard language. In the Scandinavian languages the development of this sound combination has resulted in five different initial sounds or sound combinations, namely rw, r, w, br and vr.

The aim of this study is to describe the occurrence of these sound combinations, and to explain their age and origin. A limited number of words, mainly from Swedish dialects, has been investigated. The Swedish material has been assembled in a collection that has largely also been mapped, and so has a collection of Norwegian dialect material.

The result shows that br is frequent in the Swedish dialects and that it also occurs in Trøndelagen and Østlandet in Norway, and on Jutland. R is widespread in Norway and occurs in Sweden in some words in Norrland, Dalarna, Värmland, Dalsland, Uppland and on the island of Gotland. Rw has been documented in Upper Dalarna, and w in the same area, as well as in the Kalix dialect in northernmost Sweden.

The author demonstrates that the Norwegian loss of w might have started already in the 6th century in western Norway. The loss on Gotland is independent and can be demonstrated in Old Gutnish. The metathesis rw is found in Swedish and Norwegian 13-14th century sources from Uppland, Västmanland, Östergötland and southeastern Norway. The developments wr > r and wr > rw probably have their roots in a difference between the west Norwegian wr and the east Norwegian and Swedish war which is documented from PrimScand times. W is a secondary development of rw. The change wr > br can be dated by place-name material to the early 15th century. The change wr > vr appears to have taken place at approximately the same time. The author demonstrates that the result, wr > br or wr > yr, is apparently governed by certain phonetic factors.

The failure of the Germanic wr to survive depends on the combination being phonetically complex. The risk that w would be lost was therefore considerable. However, differentiating forces worked for its retention. All developments emanating from wr, apparently disparate, can be seen as features of a larger process where a general linguistic tendency towards a weakening of sounds is confronted by conservative forces, with the above results as a consequence.

This article discusses the collection of photographs in the archive collection of Sweden's Gypsies (Sw. Sveriges zigenare) at the Nordic Museum, created by the folklorist Carl-Herman Tillhagen. Many of the photographs originate from the so-called inventory of “Swedish Gypsies”, part of the state “Gypsy investigation”, performed in 1954–1956. The aim is to critically analyse Tillhagen’s creation of this collection to gain a greater understanding of the collection and its background. We explore how and in what context Tillhagen compiled the collection and added written information to the photographs. We also place Tillhagen in a century-long anthropological, and colonial, tradition of field works aimed at creating knowledge about “the other” and the use of photography in this practice. In doing this, we pay attention to Tillhagen’s field work methods and role as a “gypsy expert”, his way of using photography and his composition of the collection. The collection can today appear to be both strange and prejudiced, while it also contains rich information of various kinds, e.g. about Roma’s living conditions as well as the normative ideals of the majority society, and about the role of folklore research and the folklore archives in collecting information on national minorities. By producing knowledge about the background of the collection and circumstances surrounding its origin we contribute to the possibility of using its photographs with a critical eye for new interpretations and new knowledge.

Våren 2004 samlades representanter från olika kulturinstitutioner för att diskutera ett samarbete på temat Årets fester. Julen 2004 blev startskottet för ett gemensamt dokumentationsarbete där ett rikt samtida material om perioden från första advent till tjugondedag jul samlades in – materialet bearbetades och presenterades sedan i publikationen Nu gör vi jul igen (2006).

I antologin medverkar representanter från institutets tre folkminnesavdelningar, Folklivsarkivet i Lund, Nordiska museet, Mångkulturellt centrum, Göteborgs stadsmuseum, Upplandsmuseet, Skånes arkivförbund, Högskolan på Gotland samt de etnologiska universitetsinstitutionerna i Uppsala, Göteborg, Stockholm, Lund och Umeå.

Flerspråkiga arkivsamlingar

På Dialekt- och folkminnesarkivet i Uppsala är en av arbetsuppgifterna kunskapsförmedling i olika former, bland annat genom att berätta om arkivets samlingar på institutets webbplats. I arkivsamlingarna finns material inte bara på svenska utan också på andra språk. Strax före jul publicerades lyssningsklipp på skogsfinska med tillhörande översättningar som skildrar äldre tiders folkmedicin och folktro, och på nyåret publicerades ljudklipp på meänkieli om notfiske och timmerflottning. Fler lyssningsklipp planeras i framtiden, bland annat på finska och de samiska språken, då ytterligare ämnen kommer att presenteras för att illustrera spännvidden av ämnesområden som dokumenterats av arkivet sedan starten i början av 1900-talet. I översättningsarbetet har arkivet haft hjälp av språkligt kunniga kollegor på sin egen och andra avdelningar liksom av Kieliviestis redaktör Inga-Britt Uusitalo.

Runt norra Östersjön och längs Mälardalens kustband tänds i slutet av augusti eldar för att ta farväl av sommaren och sommarstugan.
